Leap, and the net will appear

by Ellen Nordahl on February 1, 2010

I’ve put off this post for months.  I’m not the procrastinating type – that, along with my romantic inclination toward Badger athletes, was a bad habit I banished after my freshman year.  So, until today, this site had been relegated to simmering quietly on the back burner.

I don’t want it to simmer down into nothingness.

I had been pouring all of my energy into my “should dos” instead of “want to dos.”  Going through the motions but feeling as though they were merely an exercise in futility.  I was scared to leap; longing for the unknown but hesitant to invite new possibilities (and subsequent changes) into my life.

Today marks the beginning of my commitment to living boldly.  After spending the greater part of January in a life-changing environment, I’ve realized that my fear of failure the biggest roadblock to living the life I’ve imagined.  This in mind, I plan to:

- Step up my involvement & networking with other young professional, both in-person and online

- Embrace a “fly by the seat of my pants” approach to writing, blogging, and learning site design, while making time each day to do so

- Paint

- Bring new members into the book club I started last November, and personally read 52 books in 52 weeks

- Set the wheels in motion to move to Austin, Texas

I’ve been tinkering around with Wordpress & Thesis, telling myself that “design comes before content…I just need to learn some basic html before I’m ready to publish…(insert litany of other poor excuses here).”  Fortunately, the part of me that longs to write, connect with others and share my ideas won out.  I’m through with sitting on the sidelines; reading, observing, and ruminating while keeping my own ideas where they’re never going to be challenged or drawn into question.

Here’s to trusting the net to appear, wherever and whenever it may.

  • Hey Ellen,

I loved this post! A call to action for yourself is a bold thing to do indeed. What life-changing environment did you spend last month in? I think your goals sound doable especially if you give yourself smaller, "building block" tasks to get there. I also love the idea of the, "net," especially as someone who is often too afraid to take a leap for fear of failure. It sounds like we're both trying to overcome that fear this year, and I think blogging will be a big help along the way. Can't wait to hear more!!
